Aegean Dialogs
Joseph Powell

The dark opened, a broody blue;
a few stars burned wearily,
old eyes withdrawing into white.
We lay, side by side, on the ground,
buffeted by urges scarcely recognized
we wanted the human age of the earth
to press into our backs and joints.
The waves crashed, recrashed,
withdrew in a welter of pebble-clicks,
or disapproving tongues.
