The Maverick Posse
Dawnell Harrison
The machinist
The machinist
Works graveyard
And without stopping.
Cigarettes are his friend
After work.
He’s hard-nosed,
Brimming with adrenaline,
And oozing
With the smell of beer
From the night before.
His hands are
Coal fire black
From the grease
And hard work.
He feels like
He’s coming undone,
Similar to one of the old,
Rusty machines
That he works on at night.
He knows that it is coming but,
The machines don’t
Stop for human frailty.

These poems descend into and explore the dark psyche of human experience with such an indefatigable belief that there is light on the other side so that the reader also believes. This is the power of Dawnell Harrison’s poetry. This is the journey that awaits the reader.
