The Parade

Children chased the painted elephants.
The master rode high up in a swaying chair.
Flowers and fronds covered the pathway
as throngs lined the sides of the road,
and I followed.
The elephants kept moving the great cavalcade
as more and more bystanders joined the procession,
and still I followed every turn in the route.
The journey never ceased,
but paused once in awhile
for a new master to climb upon the elephant’s back;
on and on we went,
until I found that I could no longer keep up.
I stopped then, and watched them disappear around the bend.
